One of the World’s Dangerous Volcano May Be Erupting Soon

If Campi Flegrei, also known as the “Burning Fields,” were to erupt today, the impact could be catastrophic. As a supervolcano located near Naples in southern Italy, it has the potential to produce eruptions of the highest magnitude. The consequences of such an eruption could include:

Ejection of molten rock and volcanic gases high into the stratosphere.

Tsunamis reaching heights of up to 100 feet (33.5 meters).

A plume of sulfur and toxic ash that could spread across the globe, potentially leading to a volcanic winter. This could result in crop failures and mass extinctions due to the drastic changes in climate.

The impact would not be limited to Italy. Historical records indicate that ash from Campi Flegrei’s massive eruptions has been found as far away as North Africa, across multiple countries in the Middle East, and deep into Central Russia, over 2,000 miles from Naples.  Additionally, global climate effects such as unseasonably cold weather, destruction of crops, and famines have been associated with past eruptions, affecting regions as distant as China, Tibet, Europe, and North America.

So, while the crust of Campi Flegrei is becoming weaker and more prone to rupturing, making an eruption more likely, scientists caution that an eruption is not guaranteed. The magma still needs to be pushing up at the right location for an eruption to occur. Nonetheless, the potential impact of such an event would be felt worldwide, highlighting the importance of monitoring and preparedness for volcanic activity.
