The Polar Bear Plunge in Maryland is a fundraising event for the “Special Olympics Maryland” that involves plunging into the cold waters of the Chesapeake Bay. There are different types of plunges, such as the Superplunge, the Cool Schools Plunge, the Police Plunge, the Corporate Plunge, and the Maryland Plunge. The dates for the 2024 plunges are as follows:
- The Superplunge will take place on January 26-27, 2024 at Sandy Point State Park in Annapolis, MD.
- The Cool Schools Plunge will take place on Thursday, February 1, 2024 at Sandy Point State Park in Annapolis, MD.
- The Police Plunge will take place on Friday, February 2, 2024 at Sandy Point State Park in Annapolis, MD.
- The Corporate Plunge will take place on Friday, February 2, 2024 at Sandy Point State Park in Annapolis, MD.
- The Maryland Plunge will take place on Saturday, February 3, 2024 at Sandy Point State Park in Annapolis, MD.
There was also a Pint Size Plunge that took place on Saturday, July 15, 2023 at Lone Oak Farm Brewing Company in Barnesville, MD. This was a 6-month kickoff to the 2024 MSP Polar Bear Plunge.

The MSP Polar Bear Plunge includes events, such as the Cool Schools Plunge for teachers, coaches, and students, the Police Plunge for law enforcement, military, fire/EMS and first responders, the Corporate Plunge for businesses and organizations, the Maryland Plunge for anyone who wants to be part of the Plunge history ( you can even plunge virtually for $100 donation to this worthy cause), and of course, the SUPERPLUNGERS event which is the largest in the world happening right here in Maryland.
This event helps others by raising funds and awareness for the Special Olympics Maryland, which is a non-profit organization that provides year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. The Special Olympics Maryland also promotes social inclusion, health, and leadership among its athletes and Unified teammates, who are individuals without intellectual disabilities who train and compete alongside the athletes. By supporting the Special Olympics Maryland, this event helps create a world where everyone is accepted and respected for their abilities, not their disabilities.
The 2024 Superplunge is a fundraising event that challenges participants to take 24 plunges into the icy waters of the Chesapeake Bay in 24 hours. The event is part of the annual MSP Polar Bear Plunge, which supports the Special Olympics Maryland and its 15,588 athletes and Unified teammates.
The Superplunge will take place at Sandy Point State Park in Annapolis, MD.
Superplungers pledge to raise at least $10,000 each for the Special Olympics Maryland, and enjoy a VIP experience complete with custom swag, food, entertainment, massages, and photo opportunities.
The Superplunge is not for the faint of heart, but for those who are brrrr-brave enough to take on the ultimate Plunge endurance event. Superplungers will face the cold and the fatigue, but also the fun and the camaraderie of a special group of people who share a common goal: to make a difference in the lives of people with intellectual disabilities.
The Superplunge is also a chance to interact with some of the Special Olympics Maryland athletes and Unified teammates, who will join the Superplungers for some of the plunges. The Superplunge also features a family and friends experience, where the Superplungers can invite their loved ones to watch and even join them for a plunge.
The Superplunge is one of the most popular and prestigious events of the MSP Polar Bear Plunge, which has been a Maryland tradition for 28 years. The MSP Polar Bear Plunge is the largest Plunge in the world, and aims to raise $3.5 million this year for the Special Olympics Maryland.
